"Sports psychology is the study of psychology within a sporting context. It is an intrinsic part of understanding athletes’ mental thought processes, as well as devising methods and tactics designed to improve the overall mental health and wellbeing of sportspeople, normally within a professional sporting environment. Competitors are under immense physical and emotional stress. They feel the pressure of coaches and their teams and the pressure they put on themselves. This kind of chronic stress can distract competitors from their goals. And, if left untreated, it can lead to harmful mental and physical health issues.
Sports psychologists take a holistic approach to each client's health. They consider an individual's physical abilities alongside their mental roadblocks. They then look for ways to improve mental toughness and athletic performance simultaneously. Sports psychology benefits the whole person by encompassing both psychology and physical performance. Sports psychology can be utilized as part of ongoing player management, or alongside other areas of recovery and rehabilitation such as physiotherapy, sports therapy and sports massage.
This book will provide an overview of the field of sports psychology and exercise, which involves applying psychology topics to exercise, sports, competition and health. Topics will cover how sports psychologists’ work –at any level- with athletes and teams in motivation, concentration, resilient personalities, attention, decision making based on inter-behavioral, cognitive and other important approaches in sports psychology. Topics will also include theoretical foundations of behavior, procedures for solving problems, adherence and motivation, etc.
Sport and exercise behavior is an overview of basic concepts and principles essential to understanding the psychological and behavioral aspects of sport and exercise.
